Akpafu in Ghana.
Background Information
The story which led to the
initiative
presented is a true one. Former Munich geography teacher Dr. Aribert
Linner
collected the money to build a rural school in Ghana. It was opened in
1998. The
school flourishes, and in the autumn of 2002 an orphanage (Waisenhaus)
was
opened as well as a kitchen, toilets and two rain water reservoirs. Mr. Linner got
official recognition for his one-man initiative. There are ten local
women who run
the project, the leader is called: Moniratu, a woman in her mid-forties.
The name of the village is Akpafu Mempeasem. The village is situated in
the Volta
region. The area used to belong to the ex-German colony of Togo. In
1917, this
became the British colony named Gold Coast. When the nation became
independent, the name was changed to Ghana.
